Update on Dollar Tree Story…

THANK YOU DOLLAR TREE, for doing the right thing! In an update to the story of Dollar Tree refusing to pay death benefits for a woman killed while on duty there, they have “decided” to pay up! If for some reason you have NO CLUE as to what I am talking about, read the story HERE that I posted last week. Taneka Talley, was stabbed to death while working in the Dollar Tree store. The store said the death was a “personal” matter and would not pay death benefits to Taneka’s mother who has guardianship of Taneka’s son.
Taneka, an African American was killed by a Caucasian man because she was black. She did not know him, and he did not know her; However Dollar Tree said that this hate crime was a personal matter!
Dollar Tree, amid public outcry, public anger, news coverage, picketers and threat of a widespread Dollar Tree Boycott has “decided” to pay the death benefits because they feel it is the “right” thing to do! Read the updated story HERE.
You can’t tell me that consumers once organized can’t bring about change!!

While I’m glad the little boy will be taken care of, it’s situations like this that will cause stores like the Dollar Tree not to be a dollar for much longer.

@ Corrin – It doesn’t matter if The Dollar Tree doesn’t remain a dollar any longer…this is what they have insurance for…and what they needed to do.

Marvalus – But if stores like the Dollar Tree aren’t around any longer, does that hurt more families than it helped? If the young woman worked there, here family obviously shopped there. Where will they be if stores like that don’t exist any longer? Unable to purchase necessities?Like I said, I’m glad the family is taken care of, but I don’t agree that the store was obligated to do so. It was not a work related death.

I met the mom last week and I tell you the whole family is just ecstatic. I read Corrine’s response and just had to tell her that this was a landmark decision for many companies that have tried similar tactics in California. It is about companies that want to take your insurance money but will find anyway not to pay you. That woman was ON THE CLOCK. She was not at home.Again Regina thank you for spreading this story.Onelove..IRIEGAL
