According to the Anchorage Daily News a man convicted three times of sexually abusing a minor has won a $500,000 lottery which was set up to benefit a sex abuse charity.
Yes you read that correctly! 54 year old Alec Ahsoak of Anchorage Alaska who was convicted THREE times for sexually abusing a minor has won $500,000 in a lottery set up by the STAR (Standing Together Against Rape) Advocacy group. The half million dollar lottery is billed as the biggest in Alaska history. After taxes Ahsoak will get $350,000. Ahsoak’s past victims and their families feel he should NOT get the money. The organization is trying to take the focus off of the winner and focus on the mission of the organization…
Peppered with questions about the lottery winner, STAR also issued a written statement Monday:
“The story of STAR is not about the winner of the lottery. The story of STAR is about the victims of sexual assault we serve and sexual assaults we seek to prevent through our educational outreach.”
That may be hard to do swallow when the victims live in the same place where the perpetrator just won $500,000 for raping them…
Alec Ahsoak may have turned his life around recently but for his victims this is far from just ironic.
Ahsoak was convicted in 1993 of molesting two girls under the age of 13. He was sentenced to four years in prison, according to court records.
In March of 2000, police arrested him again for molesting a different young girl he was babysitting. Through a plea bargain, Ahsoak was sentenced to six years in prison on a single count of sexual abuse of a minor. Prosecutors in that case dropped another sex abuse charge, and a charge of failing to register as a sex offender.
If you were the victim or the family of the victim what would you do? If you were Alec Ahsoak what would you do?
