Domestic Violence… Is This The New Craze??

Domestic Violence appears to be every where, at every turn in today’s society.  I blogged about a man killing and beheading his wife who was seeking a divorce HERE.  I also blogged about a man going on a murderous rampage in Alabama in which his girlfriend was one of the victims HERE.  Of course there is the Rhianna Fenty & Chris Brown debacle which I did not bother to blog about because it seems that the blogosphere was over run with this story.

artchiquitatatecnnBut I just saw a story at about a young lawyer Chiquita Tate who was stabbed to death and found in her law office on February 20, 2009.  The police arrested her husband of 14 months Greg Harris, whom she was seeking to divorce.  According to CNN, Tate was stabbed 38 times.  Harris and Tate appeared to be a happily married couple however according to the story Tate was seeking a divorce due to marital problems and she had also leased her own apartment.

Greg Harris’ attorney, Lewis Unglesby, said police have the wrong man.

artharrisebrsheriff“Greg Harris by all accounts … is innocent. I don’t know anybody that thinks he did it, except the police,” Uglesby said. “There’s nothing in his background. He has cooperated completely with the police; he’s signed everything they’ve asked him to sign. He’s let them search his house, his car.”

Tate was a young, up and coming attorney, who had started her own law firm in downtown Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  Harris is being charged with second-degree murder and the illegal use of a dangerous weapon.  His bond is set at  $500,000.  Greg Harris also has an outstanding warrant from a December 2007 battery-domestic violence case at the couple’s home.

Blog Author commentary:

It seems like every time I turn around there is another domestic violence story on the news.  I know that domestic violence is not a new phenomenon but it appears to be so much more out in the open now.  Either the abusers are getting more careless or they just don’t care or the news is actually reporting it more.  Whatever the case may be people need to take notice and get the help that they need.  If you have any questions about whether or not you are in an abusive relationship look HERE for some warning signs.  This list is not all inclusive but it is a start.

Domestic violence has been “in the closet” for so long. It’s becoming more public now that survivors are speaking out and getting coverage. There is a murder-suicide almost weekly. I’m glad that people are talking about it, but we’ve got to do more than talk…. Check it out. It isn’t always current.

    @ RJ –
You are so correct. We need to do more than talk about it (even though that is a good start), but actions would you suggest? The statistics are staggering.
