One week and counting!
Next weekend is the prom for my little Diva. We have the $65.00 ticket (Yes, you read it correctly….$65.00, SIXTY FIVE DOLLARS!). We have the prom dress! With the perfect little bag to match! We have the after Prom “alternate” party dress, because … you know…. She cannot wear the same dress all night. ***rolls eyes*** We have the prom shoes! We have gone to have this dress altered …TWICE, no I’m sorry make that THREE times! The dress is now at the cleaners to make sure it is wrinkle free for the big day!
It is down to the wire now. Lastly, we have to solidify manicure, pedicure, and hair. We have the make-up woman on standby! This has been an exhilarating (for her) experience, and a draining (for me) experience, and frankly, I will be glad when it is over. HOWEVER, the week after prom is graduation!
I am excited for her to be done with high school and heading for her next step. I know that for many people the prom is a major milestone in life, but man the madness is out of control. Lord have mercy, you need the right shoes, clothes, hair, accessories, and God forbid someone buys the same dress as you, then it’s going to be like Stephen King’s Carrie! The level of preparation that goes into prom is madness! I do not see why all the drama, but knowing what a DIVA my baby is I just have to roll with it! I will of course post pictures of the big day! I would think the prom should be about a last party and chance to hang out with friends, many of which will be going on to college, trade school, the military or whatever. It should NOT be about the perfect look! Nevertheless, whatever, it is what it is!
I am glad that the high school days are just about over, because frankly the educational system blows! I totally applaud home schoolers! She has been in 3 high schools. 1 in Rochester, New York, 1 in Arlington, Texas, and 1 in Fort Worth, Texas. Let me tell you, I am more than ecstatic to be done with the public school system!
In the meantime, I am down to the last two classes for my degree (Yaaayyy! Go Me!). I am tired of school all the way across the board…
Stay tuned! Next week is THE PROM!!!!!!!!
Pray My Strength Saints…..

Hmmm, so I was surfing the web, like I do every day and I came across this article about church membership or …non-membership. Evidently there is a Baptist church, Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church in Kentucky that is denying membership to an interracial couple. Stella Harville and her African fiance, Ticha Chikuni are being denied membership AND are no longer allowed to sing for the church??? This is more disturbing than surprising. I am not surprised because racism is a part of life that we live with daily. If you do not think that racism is alive and well in America, well than you must not live in America!
But I find a number of things disturbing about this story…
- Melvin Thompson, the person who crafted the resolution and called for the vote is the FORMER PASTOR of this church.
- 35-40 people attended, some left and some declined to vote, But no one spoke out about this being wrong.
- The vote was 9-6 in favor of this ban on interracial couples not joining the church.
- The church’s current Pastor is Stacy Stepp, who was against the resolution.
- Why does the former Pastor have so much power to craft a resolution, But the current Pastor appears powerless to stop it?
- Interracial couples are free to attend (AND GIVE THEIR MONEY) but they cannot join??
- If you look around and see that there are no other blacks IN THE BUILDING why would you WANT to join?
According to CBSNEWS, Melvin Thompson had this to say, “I am not racist. I will tell you that. I am not prejudiced against any race of people, have never in my lifetime spoke evil” about a race, said Thompson, the church’s former pastor who stepped down earlier this year. “That’s what this is being portrayed as, but it is not.”
Hmmmm, not racist???? Anyone can attend but interracial couples cannot join??? Yes, that is what the resolution developed by FORMER PASTOR Melvin Thompson says. According to CBSNEWS, “The resolution says anyone is welcome to attend services, but interracial couples could not become members or be “used in worship services or other church functions.”
You can read the story for yourself in its entirety HERE! Please post your thoughts on this, I would be interested to get your opinion on this!

WOW! It has been 6 months since I posted here. I would love to tell you about all the FABULOUS things I have been doing and why I have not been posting on this blog but frankly the reason I have not posted in 6 months is….. I forgot my password. Yep, that is it, I simply could not remember my password or user name. It has taken me a while but things are back in order now!
However I have been slowly but surely closing in on that Bachelor Degree of Human Services Management that I have been working towards. July 2012 is when I will be done and my degree will be official. My youngest daughter is a high school senior and is set to graduate in June 2012. Of course this means student loans. So not only will I be liable for my student loans but I will also be entering the realm of her student loans. Yaayyy.
I pray that the news article I read on MSNBC.com helps me when I need it.
According to MSNBC.com, “Obama said it’s never been more important to get a college education, but it’s also never been more expensive. Obama said his plan will help not just individuals, but the nation, because graduates will have more money to spend on things like buying homes” (MSNBC.com). Read the article in its entirety HERE.
Let Us Pray…

Wow! What a day! Today was a historic moment because President Barack Obama signed the health care reform bill. Maybe now MILLIONS of uninsured people in the United States can get health care. I include myself in that number because I am currently uninsured. Why? you may ask?? Because I was laid of and being unemployed means no health insurance, but before I was laid off I still had no insurance. Why? Because in my job as an Interim Executive Director of a small non-profit run by a church I was not offered health insurance because my position was INTERIM! Since I was not a permanent employee the church that founded and funded the non-profit said they could not afford to offer me health care. So I fell in between the cracks, in the gray areas. I had a pretty good job which paid me pretty good money BUT not good enough to afford health insurance on my own and since I was not a permanent employee the church was not offering me any. I am now self-employed BUT still unable to afford coverage…
My daughter is also among the uninsured. Why? Because she is 24 years old and just graduated from college and is job searching. So she also falls in the gray area of the uninsured.
But today a bill was signed into law that may help us both get some sort of coverage!
So, after all the jubilee over the signing (by supporters) and after all the cursing and rhetoric (by detractors) guess what else happened??? According to the Associated Press (check out the video HERE) 7 minutes after Mr. President signed the bill, Attorney Generals from 13 STATES filed a law suit against the federal government saying that the health care overhaul is UNCONSTITUTIONAL! But being uninsured (not by choice but by circumstance) is just fine with them! WTH! And Yes, the state that I live in “Good Ole Texas” is one of those 13 states that filed suit. God Help Us…

I have not blogged here since August 5th. I have made a decision to be more regular with this blog and my other blog “Regina’s Family Seasons“.
This blog was originally set up for me to just talk about the news, but alas it was depressing me. I am going to dig a little deeper after tonight’s post to find some news that is uplifting and positive.
But for tonight my heart is heavy…
I am highlighting and linking to 5 news stories that have me on my knees crying out to the Father.
- Derrion Albert 16 year old honors student beaten to death on the way home from a Chicago school. Video of Derrion Albert’s beating HERE.
- China Arnold, 28 years old found guilty of killing her 1 month old baby Parris Talley. The drunken China Arnold allegedly put the baby in the microwave and cooked her for more than 2 minutes.
- 240 Dead in Philippines flooding. Bodies are still being discovered amongst all of the devastation of last weeks floods in Manila.
- According to Fox News, a mother Larhonda Marie McCall was arrested in Oklahoma City for allegedly abusing and holding her 14-year-old son captive, often in a closet for 4 1/2 years.
- McKenzie Phillips former child star of the sitcom “One Day At A Time” comes clean about a drug induced, molestation turned consensual, incestuous sexual relationship with her father. Her father was famed singer/musician John Phillips of the 60’s pop group Mamas and Papas. McKenzie’s stepmother, Michelle Phillips also of the Mamas and Papas is denying the story, but McKenzie’s younger sister Bijou Phillips (also an actress) says she knew about it. Now whether this “relationship” started out as abuse/molestation and then over the years turned into a consensual relationship only they know. The fact that her father not only introduced her to drugs BUT also supplied her with drugs; and the fact that her father repeatedly had sexual relations with her, for a period of 10 years is my issue. Our jobs as parents is to love, protect, nurture and train up a child. What this “parent” did was beyond disgusting, beyond despicable, beyond horrific. There are no words for this atrocity. I pray that she can move beyond the media backlash and finally move on with her life.
So as you can see the news is definitely weighing on my heart. As I sit here typing this post, I look up at my daughter across the room, watching television, as she rubs her belly perhaps soothing the child inside. I am thinking what kind of world are you about to enter into little one? What lies in wait for you? The harder it gets to pray means the more needed the prayers are…
My heart is heavy…

Domestic Violence appears to be every where, at every turn in today’s society. I blogged about a man killing and beheading his wife who was seeking a divorce HERE. I also blogged about a man going on a murderous rampage in Alabama in which his girlfriend was one of the victims HERE. Of course there is the Rhianna Fenty & Chris Brown debacle which I did not bother to blog about because it seems that the blogosphere was over run with this story.
But I just saw a story at CNN.com about a young lawyer Chiquita Tate who was stabbed to death and found in her law office on February 20, 2009. The police arrested her husband of 14 months Greg Harris, whom she was seeking to divorce. According to CNN, Tate was stabbed 38 times. Harris and Tate appeared to be a happily married couple however according to the story Tate was seeking a divorce due to marital problems and she had also leased her own apartment.
Greg Harris’ attorney, Lewis Unglesby, said police have the wrong man.
“Greg Harris by all accounts … is innocent. I don’t know anybody that thinks he did it, except the police,” Uglesby said. “There’s nothing in his background. He has cooperated completely with the police; he’s signed everything they’ve asked him to sign. He’s let them search his house, his car.”
Tate was a young, up and coming attorney, who had started her own law firm in downtown Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Harris is being charged with second-degree murder and the illegal use of a dangerous weapon. His bond is set at $500,000. Greg Harris also has an outstanding warrant from a December 2007 battery-domestic violence case at the couple’s home.
Blog Author commentary:
It seems like every time I turn around there is another domestic violence story on the news. I know that domestic violence is not a new phenomenon but it appears to be so much more out in the open now. Either the abusers are getting more careless or they just don’t care or the news is actually reporting it more. Whatever the case may be people need to take notice and get the help that they need. If you have any questions about whether or not you are in an abusive relationship look HERE for some warning signs. This list is not all inclusive but it is a start.
