What type of business you operate? A small moving service that provides loading and unloading service and small moves: Harlem Express Inc.
How long have you been in business? I’ve been in the relocation industry for about 14 years, but have been running my own business now for 2 years.
How did you get the name for your business? From the area I stay in, Harlem N.Y. and the quickness I could use to respond with service!
What motivated you to start this type of business? Being in the relocation industry for so long, it was a natural progression to get to the point where I run my own business.
What are your top 5 must have business tools/aids? Google +, Twitter, Buffer, Tweet Scheduler and Timely.
Where do you see your business in 5 years? Self-sufficient, serving more than one state and providing more employment for people along the way.
What inspires you? the great gift of life, my kids, God and the love of my life and soon to be wife Rachel Thompson.
Who is your business icon or who’s business ethic do you admire? Donald Trump, McDonalds dollar menu (great service, great price!) and Rachel Thompson for the nerve and the guts to push on! (Regina: I most definitely agree on Donald Trump but I am mad about the McDonalds! LOL and now I’m hungry!!)
If you were standing in front of a room full of hopeful, promising, entrepreneurs what would you say to them? Never give up on your dreams and always keep faith with God in your heart and soul and always stay humble. (Regina: EXCELLENT ADVICE -NEVER GIVE UP, KEEP THE FAITH, AND STAY HUMBLE!! LOVE IT!)

Thank you Marvin!

ENTREPRENEURIAL SERIES – Day 5

Angel, Carson, California – “Shoe Diva Elevator”

I am Angel, I own a company called, Shoe Diva Elevator. On the Elevator we sell shoes, handbags, and fine custom jewelry and inexpensive jewelry. This is Elevator’s first year in existence.
The name of the company was a result of a conversation with my husband. My husband asked me what I want to do, instantly I thought I want to Elevate, Motivate, Inspire, and upgrade people in Jesus. So he said take each word and start one business at a time. (Regina: Very creative way to come up with a name! Nice!) I started with Elevate, yes we sell high heel shoes, but also we show young ladies that they can dress classy with their style and fashion choices. We offer low prices and styles that are not common.
I have always loved shoes, once the shoes with the spikes and the skulls and cross bone began to emerge I wondered who is carrying the shoes for the ladies who feel skull and cross bones are distasteful. Handbags, accessories, shoes, these items can elevate an entire outfit.
I think the most important aids are networking; (Regina: Yes, Ma’am, networking is key! I definitely agree!
I have stumbled in my business venture and always had to ask questions. I am positive that having people in my network to ask question and look to for guidance has been optimal. I continue to pray that God guides me towards all of the help I might need.
In 5 years I see Shoe Diva Elevator supporting itself and growing into an online store that is independent, not relying on Facebook or anything else for marketing.
I am inspired by fear, whenever I feel that nervous unsure energy that comes with fear I feed on it, when everything I know says run the other way I think I can not be a prisoner to this. I’m like an all in girl. This has been my inspiration.
I admire people who have a dream and determine all of a sudden; here we go and jump.
If I were in front of a room full of promising entrepreneurs, I would say start right now, really consider you are dying in two years and you have two years to do everything that you want to do; before you leave this event have the name of your company written down. Have your mission statement written down and an outline for you business plan written down. Multi- million dollar companies have been started on the back of napkins. Kinko’s was started as a school assignment and the professor gave the student a fail stating that this company would never get off the ground.
Nike is not the only one telling you just do it.
I have a strong Faith base, I Pray and ask God for direction, if you want to be a success let Him run your business.

Thanks Angel!
Yes, you most definitely need FAITH to get a business effective, operational and successful!

Blessings,
Regina

The Father To The Fatherless – Who’s Your Daddy?

Psalm 68:5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.

On this Father’s day, I am thinking about spiritual Fathers.  Spiritual Fathers are the men who are reproducing spiritually, men who have matured spiritually and are now nurturing, and training a younger generation of spiritual children.  The men who are taking the time to impart spiritual knowledge, wisdom, and practices on our young men and women (and the not so young!).  Think of the stuff your earthly father is supposed to do just from a spiritual perspective. You know the loving, training, disciplining, encouraging, inspiring, motivating, but all with a spiritual emphasis!

I started thinking of my spiritual father and came to the realization that I did not have a spiritual father.  I found it very interesting that my mother was a single parent mostly (my parents divorced when I was 7).  So after thinking about it for a very long time, I have come to the conclusion that my physical mother was also my spiritual mother and she was STILL a single parent.  Now don’t misunderstand me, I have had spiritual men who had a place in my life, and who imparted wisdom, or knowledge, or some other resource that I needed at the time, but none of them fit the role of a spiritual father.  I had an awesome Pastor years ago who was very instrumental and influential in my spiritual walk.  He was Pastor George Samuel, of Faith Christian Center, in Staten Island, New York.  Pastor Samuel exposed us to awesome people of faith and awesome training.  We received training and spiritual instruction from people like Casey Treat, David Demola, Marilyn Hickey, and other exceptional men and women of faith.  Pastor Samuel gave us training that was unmatched.  He was the closest thing to a spiritual father, but more like a spiritual uncle!
We eventually moved to a new state, but I took all that I had learned with me!  My mother, who took it a step further and nurtured my spiritual yearning, corroborated everything that he gave me.  As I got older, I learned more, I studied more; I gained more knowledge and wisdom in the ways of the Lord.
I have been a member of other churches since FCC, but none of them matched the training I received early in my spiritual life.  The churches since then have complimented my learning, and multiplied it but no one has ever filled the role of a spiritual father.
Even though I have never had a spiritual father, I do not feel that I have lacked in that area.  I never felt like a spiritual orphan, or like I was missing out on something because GOD WAS ALWAYS THERE! I think I have come to the realization of what the verse in Psalm 68:5 means or what it means for me.  God has provided the nurturing and guidance that I needed.  He has become my spiritual Father.  So when that verse says that God is a Father to the Fatherless I feel that HE has me covered spiritually!  Whatever I lacked HE provided! HE is truly the Father to the Fatherless!

Happy Father’s Day!

Accidentally On Purpose

God does not make mistakes. He does things in His own way, by His design, and we do not have to understand it But I sure respect it!!

An elderly Chinese woman had two
large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack in
it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered
a full portion of water.

At the end of the long walks from
the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half
full.

For a full two years this went
on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half
pots of water..

Of course, the perfect pot was
proud of its accomplishments.
But the poor cracked pot was ashamed
of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only
do half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived
to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the
stream.

‘I am ashamed of myself, because
this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way
back to your house.’

The old woman smiled, ‘Did you
notice that there are flowers on your side of the path,
but not on the other pot’s side?’

‘That’s because I have always
known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your
side of the
path, and every day while we walk
back, you water them.’

For two years I have been able
to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table.

Without you being just the way
you are, there would not be this beauty to
grace the house.’

Each of us has our own unique
flaw. But it’s the cracks and flaws we each have that make
our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.

You’ve just got to take each person
for what they are and look for the good in them.

Tell the readers a little bit about yourself and Explain what type of business you operate?
A: I like to say I’m a communications’ jack-of-all-trades with extensive experience in numerous facets of  communication, administration, and creative expression.

I’m copy writer, editor, avid blogger, spoken word artist, and author whose core competencies include ghost writing, editorial consulting, copy editing, public speaking and small group presentations.
In a nutshell, I help people find their voice and pen their passion.

How long have you been in business?
A: I’ve been doing this part time for the past 7 years but just made it official in April 2012.

How did you get the name for your business?
A: I bought the 31 Days to Building a Better Blog and one of things it touched on was discovering your brand. Since I am my brand, a little play in words with Selena’s Write and Write Communications was born.

What motivated you to start this type of business?
A: No matter what line of business I’ve worked in, I’ve always come across people with the same problem: the inability to pen their thoughts in a way that others can understand or comprehend. After doing it as a hobby, as part of volunteer work and as a job, I decided to make the full jump since there is such a need.

What are your top 5 must have business tools/aids?
A: 1) my iPhone; I can’t live without it. 2) Great business books on blogging and business practices. Think Darren Rowse and Harvey Mackay. 3) Nook, laptop and/it computer 4) White board and 5) Writing Manuals like CMOS and AP Stylebook.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?
A. In five years, I see expansion with a keen focus on business consulting on an international level. I see growth to include graphic design consults and branding/logos. I see e-books written by myself and a how-to on how to get started with writing.

What inspires you?
A: Love inspires me. The love of a man I’ve never seen who died a death I’ll never comprehend just so I could know the depth of my importance in this world. It drives me to take on the Goliaths in life and render them useless–powerless. Love gives me the wings to soar and the heart to never surrender.

Who is your business icon or who’s business ethic do you admire?
A: I don’t have an icon per se but I most admire some pretty awesome Mommy bloggers who are changing the face of entrepreneur-ship. They are blazing trails and showing that a hobby, can become a passion which can become the start of something phenomenal.

If you were standing in front of a room full of hopeful, promising, entrepreneurs what would you say to them?
A: Never, ever stop dreaming, thinking, growing or learning. Never allow others to put you in a box, chain you to path or otherwise kill the dream that burns in your veins. Be you and enjoy who you are but leave room to become more than you ever thought possible!

ENTREPRENEURIAL SERIES – Day 2

Zack A. Isaacs, Chicago, IL “2CityNews”
http://www.twitter.com/zackaisaacs
http://www.facebook.com/zack.isaacs

I am a multimedia journalist with a background in sales, marketing and television production.

I am the owner of 2City Media which produces the online news outlet, 2CITYNEWS (2CN)

2CITYNEWS was established June 23, 2011 to honor the anniversary of my grandmother’s birth.

The name 2CITYNEWS was inspired from Chicago’s nickname as the “Second City” (2nd City) but I knew that getting a patent for that would be tough.
Additionally, Chicago is a tale of two cities in one. But the national media only talks about the violence going on in Chicago’s inner city and the prosperity of the other areas.
I wanted to flip that around and expose the “good in the hood” and show the imperfections of our “better” neighborhoods.

I was motivated to start 2CN for two reasons: 1) I couldn’t find any journalism opportunities, so my mother inspired me to create my own; 2) As a community activist, I felt there was a need to document history the right way–whether it was good or bad.

My TOP 5 Must Have Business Tools: Computer, Video Equipment, Tripod, Business Cards, and Business Attire. (Regina: EXCELLENT POINT Zack!!! Many youth do not have business attire and are clueless about what to wear for an interview.)

In 5 years, I see 2CN as a national news agency with bureaus in every region and providing jobs in media for people of all ethnic backgrounds.

I am inspired by the fact that no matter how much I think of quitting–the love of storytelling is in me. I can’t run from it.
I have been inspired by men like Juan C. Perez (Highbrid Nation) and Toure Muhammad (Bean Soup Times). Both are men who showed me the ropes of starting a media outlet and I am indebted to them.

I would tell a room of entrepreneurs to “work while it is day.” You must take advantage of your youth. I’m almost 28 years old and I’ve been growing this business for a year and I know that 30 is around the corner. That is why I work so passionately. I don’t want to be 40 still trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. In order to make progress, sometimes you have to cut ties with people who will impede it. While Facebook and Twitter are must-have tools for building business, it is important to turn them off at least 2 hours everyday. Given the level of social media addiction in our country, that is not a simple thing to do. But there was life before Facebook and cell phones as recently as 15 years ago. Back in 1997, I was only trying to catch a little TV after I did my homework and maybe go play outside.

I would add that we need to “re-program” our children about the true purpose of education. Education is not a gateway to employment anymore. That’s why we have people on TV complaining about having multiple degrees, six figures of debt but they can’t find work. A degree is just a prerequisite to help job recruiters weed out candidates. The purpose of getting an education is to sort through hundreds of skills to see which ones you need to succeed.
At most universities, you need 120 credit hours to graduate. That means you might take anywhere from 35 to 40 classes and study at least 10 chapters per class. That’s over 400 chapters of information and thousands of definitions and test questions. It is YOUR job to sort through all of that data and find what you can use and discard what you can’t.

The average college graduate can’t remember Chapter 3 from Chemistry class–but he or she might remember that calories are a measurement of energy. Well, that is what our children should do with their education–pull out memorable concepts and find a way to relate them to their career goals.

Well said Zack, well said!
WOW!!!! I absolutely LOVE ZACK!! A young man with a vision, the brains, and the drive to make a difference!

**Zack and I disagree on MANY topics, BUT I DEFINITELY RESPECT His drive and determination! I love seeing our young adults blazing the trail!**

Regina
